Lakefront Restaurants on Lake Oconee

For such a small town, Lake Oconee has some BIG eats (Bone Island Grillhouse pun intended). Our restaurants are second to none and provide opportunities to eat various types of cuisine in fun atmospheres. One of the best ways to enjoy our fine dining here at Lake Oconee is to, duh, eat by the lake! We’ve created a list of our favorite (and only) lakefront restaurants, in no specific order.   1. Bone Island Grillhouse Bone Island was first opened in 2008 on Lake Sinclair by a local resident and his family. After several years on Lake Sinclair they decided to move their location to Lake Oconee. What a great idea that was, because now B.I.G. is one of the top lakefront restaurants on Lake Oconee. Located in the heart of Lake Oconee right off 44 you’ll fall in love with their menu and the welcoming atmosphere. Occasionally, they have live entertainment on their outdoor patio. They offer a Cajun inspired menu with items like Seafood Gumbo and Pecan Seasoned Red Trout. In addition to tasty food, you’ll find an excellent drink and dessert menu. They have your normal beer selections as well as seasonal craft beer.  A favorite drink named after our lake, the Oh!conee is a yummy blend of Passion Fruit Liquor, rum and strawberry mix. You can’t leave without finishing off your dinner with The B.I.G. Sampler, a delicious dessert that includes samples of the flourless chocolate torte, peach cobbler and key lime pie. Bone Island Grillhouse DressingBig things are happening for B.I.G with a second location in Athens as well as the production of their famous Herb Parmesan Vinaigrette Salad Dressing – available for sale now!  Also, be sure to follow B.I.G. on Facebook so you can keep up with their latest specials and featured entertainment for the week! **photos taken from B.I.G. Previously Granite Shoals Marina, the Boathouse offers a southern style cuisine with a “lakey” atmosphere. Serving as restaurant and a marina (with boat storage) it is only open May through September. On Saturday evenings in the summer they offer free live entertainment by local bands/musicians such as Pullin’ Strings, Kyle Smith and Oconee Rhythm Section. You can arrive by car or by boat in one of their many slips. Don’t be fooled by their simple menu as their food is full of flavor and will be sure to delight your taste buds. You’ll find items like hush puppies, burgers, BBQ ribs/pulled pork and fried catfish. Come out and enjoy this small-town restaurant with great views, a fun atmosphere and good food!       3. Gaby’s By the Lake  Gaby’s by the Lake is a part of The Ritz-Carlton on Lake Oconee. Even though it is located inside of the hotel grounds, you do not have to be a guest to dine at Gaby’s. Gaby’s is a great lakefront choice because 1) the views are incredible 2) you can wear whatever you want! No shirt or shoes required, although you should use your best judgment and 3) the food is delicious! They have both indoor and outdoor seating, so weather is not an issue – in fact, on a rainy day it’s just as beautiful. The bar seating overlooks the lake and the pool and is a bit more casual with high top tables, while the other seating is as formal as one can imagine for poolside dining. Some of their menu items include lobster grilled cheese, watermelon gazpacho, grilled swordfish and many other delicious choices. Thirst won’t be an issue as they have some of the best cocktail recipes around. See their menu(s) and view the hours here.       4. Georgia Butts BBQ Georgia Butts BBQ Aerial Georgia Butts BBQ is sure to please any BBQ fan and has a super convenient location (both by water and by land). Georgia Butts has been a favorite around the lake since it opened many years ago and it just recently moved to its new lakefront location right past the highway 44 bridge. They have all your favorite BBQ items like BBQ sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, turkey sandwiches and BBQ by the pound and bulk. Sides include items such as coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad and mac and cheese. They are open for lunch, dinner and now breakfast! If you follow their Facebook page you’ll get updates on various musicians that play evenings and weekends at their location.     5. The Waterside Restaurant The Waterside Restaurant is a part of Cuscowilla, but luckily you don’t have to be a member to enjoy their food. The staff is extremely friendly, the views are beautiful and the food is always delicious. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their unique menu includes items like Crab and Artichoke Omelets (breakfast), Salmon BLTs (lunch) and Grilled Veal Milanese Chops (dinner). Yet, they also offer items like burritos (breakfast), turkey wraps and burgers! Occasionally, they have live entertainment in the evenings, so be sure to follow them on their Facebook page to keep up.
